Wesley Plumber appeared to be an ordinary contestant.
Dressed modestly and speaking softly, he told the judges a little about himself before taking his place at the piano. The audience settled in for what seemed like a simple musical performance.
Then he began singing ABBA’s classic song, “Take A Chance On Me.”
At first, everything seemed normal.
But suddenly, people in the audience started singing along.
One voice became two. Two became ten. Then dozens.
The judges looked around in confusion as audience members rose from their seats and joined the performance. What had started as a solo audition was quickly turning into something much bigger.
And the surprises weren’t over.
As the song reached its climax, a full choir appeared.
Then, to everyone’s amazement, members of the UCLA marching band rushed onto the stage, transforming the audition into a massive musical spectacle.
The theater exploded with energy.
The audience cheered, danced, and sang along as the performance grew larger and more elaborate with every passing second.
When it was over, the crowd gave a thunderous standing ovation.
The judges were impressed—but not all of them agreed.
Simon Cowell and Heidi Klum loved the creativity and voted “Yes.”
However, Howie Mandel and Sofía Vergara voted “No.”
The audience couldn’t believe it.
With two votes against them, the group was eliminated from the competition.
Only later did many viewers discover the truth: “Wesley Plumber” wasn’t a real contestant at all, but a character played by comedian Eric Gersen as part of a massive prank created by the performance group Improv Everywhere.
Although they didn’t advance in the competition, their unforgettable flash mob became one of the most viral and talked-about auditions in AGT history.
